Batters Box Background:

Cory Sumner is a co-founder and owner of Batters Box Baseball and Sumner Athletics, LLC. Cory has been a professional baseball hitting instructor and coach since 2002. He and his father, Dr. Tim Sumner, founded what is now known as the Batters Box in the fall of 2002. During the last 15 years, Cory has worked with more than 6,000 young men and women and has coached and instructed hundreds of players that have gone on to play at the next level.

In fall 2009, Mr. Sumner launched the Batters Box team program. Cory currently serves as the Manager and Coach of the Batters Box 18U and 17U showcase teams as well as director of all Batters Box teams. Under Cory's direction, the Batters Box team program has exploded, rapidly becoming not only one of the premier elite summer and fall travel programs in the Mid-South, but also in the nation. In fall 2013, Batters Box expanded to include youth competitive teams as well. The Batters Box now has 20 teams, from ages 7-18U.
In 2013, Cory Sumner inked a deal teaming the Batters Box up with global baseball equipment and apparel powerhouse Wilson/DeMarini to become one of only seven national programs sponsored by Wilson/DeMarini. In fall 2016, the Batters Box became an official Wilson Premier, DeMarini Gold Squad Organization.
Since starting the Batters Box team program in fall of 2009, Cory Sumner has coached over 1,500 games with great success at primarily the 17U and 18U level and most recently at the 7U and 8U level as well. Over that time, he has also led our player promotion and development efforts and has been instrumental in helping send over 375 Batters Box players and clients on to college and professional baseball and softball. In both 2015 and 2016, the Batters Box had 26 players advance to the next level each year (52 total).
Baseball Background:
Cory was a four-year starter at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama where he posted a .320 career batting average. He holds career school records in runs scored, stolen bases, and finished 2nd in career hits, 4th in doubles, and 3rd in triples. In addition, Cory holds the single season record for fielding percentage and runs scored at Samford.
Before his time at Samford, Cory spent one year as a red-shirt at Mississippi State University where he was a member of the 1998 College World Series team.
Cory was also a four-year letterman for Coach Phil Clark at Germantown High School. His senior year he earned All-District, All-Metro, and All- Region honors while being named Germantown's Most Outstanding Offensive player in 1997 for the nationally ranked Red Devils. As a sophomore, he was a member of the undefeated 38-0 State and National Championship team.

Individual, Group, and Team Lessons:

Individual, group, and two player hitting lessons are available with Cory on weekdays from 3:30 to 10:00 PM. Special team lessons are available on the weekends. Coach Sumner offers standard 30 and 45 minute lessons with one hour lesson available upon request. All lessons include drills, batting practice, and video analysis at no additional charge.

In order to see the best results, it is important to be consistent with scheduling lessons and consistent with practicing outside of lessons. Hitting a baseball has been proven to be the most difficult thing to do in any sport... for a player to reach his/her full potential, they must put in the work.

Cory has helped thousands of students from age 5 to 25, from tee ball to professional, improve their baseball and softball skills and is ready to help you take your game to the next level.
